Who takes the points?
The FIFA World Cup 2026 is going to be the biggest sporting event in human history, spanning three nations and 16 host cities. But for fans traveling from Europe, South America, or Asia, attending games in the United States presents a unique, sometimes shocking hurdle: geography.
Unlike compact European cities where you can walk from your hotel to the stadium or take a quick underground train, US stadiums are massive, spread out, and frequently located miles outside their metropolitan centers.
If you don’t plan your logistics beforehand, you will end up stranded, late, or paying a $200 surge price for an Uber. Here is your official stadium logistics survival manual for the three most prominent venues.
1. MetLife Stadium (New York / New Jersey)
The Trap: Thinking MetLife is in New York City. It is actually in East Rutherford, New Jersey, separated from Manhattan by the Hudson River and some of the worst tunnel traffic on Earth.
The Survival Plan:
- Do NOT Uber/Lyft: On match days, gridlock at the Lincoln Tunnel will turn a 20-minute ride into a 2-hour nightmare, with surge pricing easily crossing $150.
- Take the Train: This is the gold standard. Go to Penn Station in Manhattan, buy a ticket to the Meadowlands Sports Complex, and take the NJ Transit train to Secaucus Junction. From Secaucus, transfer directly to the Meadowlands Rail Line, which drops you off right at MetLife’s gates.
- Timing: Trains run continuously, but queue lines at Secaucus can get long. Leave Manhattan at least 3 hours before kickoff to enjoy the atmosphere stress-free.
2. SoFi Stadium (Los Angeles)
The Trap: Los Angeles is infamous for its lack of unified transit and legendary traffic congestion. SoFi Stadium is in Inglewood, and parking is both astronomically expensive and difficult to exit.
The Survival Plan:
- Go Rail-to-Bus: Avoid driving entirely. Take the LA Metro Rail (either the C Line to Hawthorne/Lennox Station or the K Line to Downtown Inglewood Station).
- The Express Shuttle: The city runs dedicated, free express shuttle buses from both Metro stations directly to the SoFi Stadium transit center on match days.
- Rideshare Hack: If you must use Uber/Lyft, do not call them directly to the stadium gates after the match. Walk 15-20 minutes north toward Manchester Boulevard or south toward Century Boulevard, enter a local coffee shop or restaurant, and call your ride from there. You will save an hour of waiting and half the cost.
3. AT&T Stadium (Dallas / Arlington)
The Trap: Arlington, Texas (where AT&T Stadium is located) is the largest city in the United States without a public mass transit system. There are no subways, no light rails, and no public city buses.
The Survival Plan:
- Use Dedicated Event Shuttles: Many hotels in Arlington and the surrounding Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex offer private, guest-only shuttle buses to the stadium. When booking your accommodation, make sure to filter for hotels that explicitly offer World Cup transit.
- Rideshare Zones: There are designated, massive rideshare drop-off and pick-up zones at the stadium. Expect heavy walking before and after the game.
- The Heat Warning: June and July in Texas are brutally hot, with temperatures regularly exceeding 100°F (38°C). Wear sunscreen, carry an empty reusable water bottle (stadiums have hydration stations), and pace yourself.
General Stadium Rules & Best Practices
To ensure you don’t get turned away at the security gates, memorize these three golden rules:
- The Clear Bag Policy: Most US stadiums prohibit traditional backpacks, purses, and camera bags. You are allowed a clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC bag that does not exceed 12” x 6” x 12”, or a small clutch purse (about the size of a hand).
- Cashless Venues: Almost all major stadiums in 2026 are 100% cashless. Make sure you have tap-to-pay set up on your phone (Apple Pay, Google Pay) or bring a physical credit/debit card.
- Digital Tickets Only: Print-outs or PDF screenshots of tickets are typically not accepted. Download the official FIFA Ticketing app, log in, and add your tickets to your phone’s digital wallet before arriving at the stadium, as cellular signals can get extremely congested near the venue.
